Then he told the disciples; ‘my soul is crushed with horror and sadness to the point of death; stay here, stay awake with me’.
Jesus also got to that point where you once felt your life was almost over; when you felt you had got to stop the journey. He got to that stage where he was scared of what was to come, He was horrified with the pain of knowing that his flesh would suffer, that he will be mocked BUT He knew that at such times, PRAYER was the only key to finding perfect peace and strength needed to continue the journey. Have you stopped your journey of getting to where God destined for you because of similar fears? have you settled halfway thinking you have arrived only because of the fear of meeting pain? Don’t stop! Pray your way to the end!
Stay awake with me! I understand! Jesus is telling us to stay awake and use the prayer key like he told the disciples
Then He returned to the three disciples and found them asleep. Peter! He called; couldn’t you even stay awake with me one hour? Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For the Spirit indeed is willing, but how weak the body is!
Things worth noting:
1) If Jesus had not prayed when he was burdened with sadness; could he have been able to resist the temptation of using supernatural ability to deal with those who came to capture him? Because He was scared to death of what was to come, thus, He said….if it is possible, let this cup be taken away from me…..(Mathew 26:39b) and he would have defeated them if he wanted; He said in verse 53 of Mathew 26 ” don’t you realize that I could ask my father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly?” but rather he prayed and only then was his flesh made subject to the Father’s will.
2)” But if I did, how will the scripture be fulfilled that describe what is happening NOW?” (Mathew 26:54) if he had not prayed, would he have been able to draw the strength that he needed to overcome that burden of wanting to let go of the cross? Would he have been able to overcome that temptation that came shortly?
Note this: when burdened with the worries of life, be careful because temptation may be looming in the corner. But you can pray your way out like Jesus did.
3) Jesus prayed three (3) times; this confirms what Apostle Paul said; that we should pray without ceasing. He prayed until he got Peace, he prayed until his will was subjected to that of the father, he prayed until he could only see the glory there was to come, he prayed until the flesh was aligned to respect the spirit. He prayed!
Even before now he told the disciples that prayer does not only make us acknowledge God or talk with him or get our needs granted or acquire forgiveness etc. but also, in prayer, temptations to come are addressed… and lead us not into temptation… (Mathew 6:13a)
Stay awake with me! Pray! Overcome!
PRAYER: Oh God, we pray for the grace to pray always, even when it hurts the most, for the grace to remain in thy presence, even in hard times and for the grace to remain faithful to You in Jesus name. Amen. We speak peace into our every situation in Jesus name. Amen
Oh God, we declare we love you not only for who You are but also for all you went through from birth to the cross, just to lead us to you. Thank You for such amazing love!
